Today, the city has grown around this area and is called “Korah”. It is home to 120,000 people, many of them orphans or vulnerable children. The children end up in the trash dump, searching every day for food. They often choose to be silent and feel worthless. Many are orphans and HIV positive.

IMG_7628Personal Story:
Tsegaye Eshete, a Canadian citizen with Ethiopian origin, grew up in this area and experienced the horrific conditions first hand. Now, together with his local partner in Ethiopia, Bethel, he wants to do something about the situation.

The Need:
People who live here are thought of as being the poorest of the poor. Today it is known as the place of those who are forgotten, forsaken and cursed. It has become home for orphans, disabled, elderly and the diseased. Years ago, under Hailie Selasie this area was designated as a leper colony. At that time it was a place outside of the city where people suffering from leprosy could live without interacting with the rest of the city. It became known as a cursed and forsaken place.

Today, the city has grown around this area and is called “Korah”. It is home to 120,000 people, many of them orphans or vulnerable children. The children end up in the trash dump, searching every day for food. They often choose to be silent and feel worthless. Many are orphans and HIV positive.

The living conditions are beyond description with as many as 27 families crowded together under one roof with no sanitation, water or minimal basic necessities.

The Plan:
Join Tsegaye and his local partner Bethel as they target to assist 200 orphans, elderly and disabled victims.

Their planned interventions include:

• A day care centre for vulnerable children
• Improve basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, income, education, safety and health.
• Small business and income generation initiatives
• Educational opportunities
• Family environment for orphans
• Non formal health and education centres
• Sanitation and Water
• Life skills and income generation for the elderly

Campaign Updates:

Bethel responds in Ethiopia by providing Food,Water, Shelter, Financial help, Blankets, and clothing to survivors of landslide at dump.

I (Rhondi) was able to visit this ministry in October 2019. I was very moved by seeing the difficult conditions that so many there live in – and was very inspired by the staff. How encouraging to see the light & hope God is bringing to this dark place through this ministry.
