The Girls Gotta Run Foundation is a non-profit organization using the sport of running as an innovative approach to create safe spaces in school, end child marriage and expand access to secondary school for vulnerable girls. Girls in middle school and high school are the focus of the athletic scholarships, which include school and running uniforms, healthy snacks and meals, running practices, school tuition, and a life skills program that touches on important social topics like avoiding rape, developing healthy relationships, and building confidence. This program is special because it helps girls build social and peer networks and develop friendships at a critical time in their development. The ripple effect is also huge, as athletic scholars teach their younger siblings some of the skills they’ve learned and their mothers are enveloped into a financial literacy and entrepreneurship program. The moms participate in a savings group and build up the group capital to make investments in various businesses, including cafés, hair salons and initiatives selling grain, beans and handmade products at a local market. The girls are chosen for the scholarship program based on their financial need and potential to continue on to post-secondary education. So far, through generous donations to Devxchange, 26 girls have been sponsored with athletic scholarships in the Girls Gotta Run program. Because so many of those young women are seized by ambition and determination, there is now an opportunity to support them beyond the Girls Gotta Run program as they proceed to prep school. This Alumni program provides financial support for school tuition and school supplies.
