Who We Are
For the past 10 years the Pokhara Children’s Home has been providing sustaining and loving care for children who could not be provided for in their own homes. About 15 children who previouslywere not able to have their needs met are now receiving shelter, nourishment, education and care.
In 2015 the Nepalese founder of the home felt a calling to care for children. He started the Mercy and Truth Children’s Home of the Himalayas. In 2021 a small group of Canadians became aware of this home and the needs they were experiencing and started supporting them. With ongoing support this home will continue to nurture these children and prepare them a successful life in adulthood.
Challenges and Next Steps
There are on going challenges with the operation of such a children’s home. Rising costs for health care, transportation, education, food and accommodations are an on going issue. Hiring staff to cook, clean and tutor the children is also a challenge. Through the DevXchange program we are striving towards paying a regular salary for two staff, as well as helping with costs associated with health care and education.
History
Due to challenges related to poverty, there are children in this country who are not able to be cared for by their families. Without support most of these children would face a future with little hope, where they’d be challenged with poor education, low income jobs and minimal health care.
The Current Plan
Thanks to the Pokhara Children’s Home, about 15 of these children no longer have to worry about malnutrition, education or health care. They can be in a home where they are treated with respect and dignity. This government certified children’s home is subject routine inspections from government officials, who confirm the children are being well cared for. Children aged 6 to 17 are having physical, educational and emotional needs met. When they leave the home they will have ambitions, andbe well equipped to pursue them.
