Tom and Beth Fellows started DevXchange in 2006. They have decades of experience in International Development and have worked with all the large NGO’s and UN organizations including UNICEF, UNHCR, World Vision, Food for the Hungary, CPAR as well as consultants for many others. They also worked with the Canadian Embassy in Nairobi and coordinated much of the relief work during the famine in Ethiopia during the 70’s and 80’s.
After decades of work with large institutional organizations they realized with the rise of local NGO’s in developing countries there needed to be a new decentralized approach that connected individual Canadians and groups directly with local implementing partners – thus the name DevXchange which stands for “Development Exchange”. Development is a two way street. Learning from each other. Beth also wrote a booklet called “Helping People Overseas”. In the book she outlines 10 principles of development for effectively helping people overseas instead of the North American mentality of the Santa Claus approach or the top down colonial style direction and control that has unwanted outcomes.
