Orphan Sponsorship Program

Hayat – holding a picture of her sponsor family

Currently 47 orphaned children are sponsored through this program. They live with a relative who is very poor and unable to support them without assistance. Sponsorship funds provide monthly food supplies, school supplies, some clothing and bedding. New Hope staff visit regularly and take supplies and check on their progress as they get to know them and their families. In June 2023 we visited them in Bahir Dar and found most of them doing well. As they get older, we talk to them about what they would like to do and seek to support them in finding work. Hayat is now 16 and wants to be a nurse. She lives in a small mud room with 6 other people. Her relatives have a small income from basket weaving. Sponsorship has made a huge difference in her life. Berhan, now 14, had been destitute and homeless and New Hope helped him and his 17 year old sister find a small mud room to rent. Their parents drowned in a flood. The sister works as a labourer and their smiles beamed with gratitude as they thanked their sponsor, a 14 year old boy and his grandmother from Australia because now they have hope. Sponsoring makes all the difference to the lives of the poor.
