We are working to conduct Adult Literacy program in unwritten tribal languages of India.

Our Project

As these languages are unwritten they are not taught in the schools where the medium of education is the state language. Most of the adults are illiterates in the areas we are working in. Even the number of school going children is only increasing very slowly as studying in a language which is not spoken at home is very difficult.

Our Plan

Our work is to make the illiterate adults speaking the unwritten tribal languages as mother tongues into literates so that they will be able to read.

We are thus enabling them to be able to read what they need be able to lead an independent, efficient and enriched life.

Project Background

When we heard about the unwritten tribal languages of India and the high percentage of illiteracy and lack of any written literature and so their poor economic condition, we were drawn to serve these people by producing Adult Literacy material to teach them to read, and literatures also for them to read. The Government tries to make them literates by conducting Literacy programs in the state languages. But they are not very successful because acquiring the skill of reading and writing in a language which they don’t know well is difficult.

Our Goal

Our goal at this time is for $3000 CDN. We believe with these funds we will be able to train 250 people in 5 tribal language groups (50 in each).

The literacy classes will take 3 months, studying 5 days a week.

The funds will pay for our teachers and supplies (blackboard, slates, and writing materials)
